Fragrance has always reflected culture, but today’s fragrance landscape is changing faster than ever.
Consumers are no longer simply choosing a signature scent; they are building fragrance wardrobes, layering products, experimenting with formats and using fragrance as an extension of identity, mood and wellbeing.
The UK fragrance market grew by 8% in value during 2025 to reach £3.3 billion, with Euromonitor forecasting continued growth through to 2030¹.
For brands and formulators, this creates an opportunity to rethink fragrance beyond traditional olfactive families. Today’s consumers are seeking scents that feel more personal, emotionally resonant and sensorially sophisticated.

Consumer expectations are changing alongside fragrance preferences. Fragrance is increasingly becoming a daily ritual rather than a single-product purchase. Layering routines, off-season scenting and fragrance wardrobes are encouraging consumers to own multiple fragrances for different occasions, moods and environments.
Innovation is also expanding into new formats. Solid perfumes, fragrance balms, body mists, jelly soaps and milk-inspired formats are creating new opportunities for brands to deliver scent experiences beyond traditional fine fragrance. Reflecting this shift, the global solid-perfume market is estimated at $1.76 billion in 2026, while its online popularity grew 174.6% year over year in 2025².

Gourmand fragrances continue to dominate, but the category has matured.
Rather than overtly sugary compositions, consumers are gravitating towards darker, richer interpretations inspired by the pantry. Pistachio, roasted nuts, salted caramel, black amber, plum, vanilla woods and warming spices are replacing confectionery sweetness with a more refined, comforting profile.

Hyper-realistic combinations of ripe fruits and fresh flowers create fragrances that feel vibrant and optimistic while maintaining elegance. These compositions offer softness and emotional comfort without appearing overly youthful, reflecting consumers’ desire for joyful, colourful experiences that still feel premium.
Unexpected pairings and enhanced realism are helping brands create fragrances with greater depth and individuality.

Traditional florals are also being reinvented.
Modern fragrance compositions are combining classic floral notes with metallic accords, musks, woods, leather, incense and mineral facets to create scents that feel contemporary and gender-fluid. Violet leaf, iris, orange blossom and neroli are being reinterpreted through unexpected combinations that blur the boundaries between floral, woody and aromatic fragrances.
These futuristic florals offer consumers something familiar, yet distinctly modern.

The wellness movement continues to influence fragrance development.
Green, calming scent profiles centred around matcha, tea accords and botanical notes are gaining momentum as consumers increasingly seek fragrances that support emotional wellbeing alongside personal expression. According to Spate, searches for tea perfumes have increased by nearly 65%, with matcha, green tea and white tea leading the category ³.
Interest in matcha-inspired fragrances has grown significantly, while tea scents continue to attract increasing attention across social media. These fragrances bridge the gap between freshness and gourmand sweetness, delivering a lighter, more mindful fragrance experience.

Milky, lactonic compositions featuring notes such as almond milk, tonka bean and Cashmeran® create soft, comforting fragrances that sit close to the skin. Rather than masking natural scent, these “skin scents” enhance it, creating an intimate, second-skin effect that feels understated yet luxurious.
As consumers increasingly value authenticity and comfort, these subtle fragrances continue to gain traction across prestige and niche markets.

Solar fragrances represent another growing direction. In a study of more than 32,000 consumer reviews and comments relating to 39 fragrances launched in 2024, Sensia identified solar notes as one of five major emerging olfactory trends for 2025⁴.
Warm, radiant compositions featuring sun-warmed florals, salty mineral accords and soft amber notes recreate the sensation of sunshine on skin. These fragrances feel optimistic, effortless and easy to wear, offering consumers an atmospheric experience that bridges fresh and gourmand fragrance styles. Rather than recreating a specific place, solar fragrances aim to capture a feeling.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, niche fragrance continues to push creative boundaries.
Earthy, smoky and animalic accords are returning as consumers seek fragrances with stronger storytelling and greater individuality, creating bold compositions with depth and character, appealing to consumers looking beyond conventional fragrance structures.
These fragrances reflect growing interest in artisanal perfumery and authentic olfactive experiences.

Gen Alpha is emerging as an influential consumer group, particularly within body care and accessible fragrance.
Sweet, nostalgic fragrances, particularly vanilla, continue to dominate, but consumers also expect ingredient transparency and skin-friendly formulations. This gives brands the opportunity to combine on-trend scents with trusted formulations.

Today’s fragrance landscape is defined by contrast. Comfort sits alongside experimentation, minimalism alongside indulgence, and wellness alongside self-expression.
For formulators and brands, success will depend on translating these evolving consumer behaviours into fragrance concepts that feel authentic, technically credible and commercially relevant.
